The identification number issued to a chemical substance by the Chemical Abstracts Service Division or the American Chemical Society.
The chemical name that precisely identifies the pure substance (either a chemical element, compound or mineral) using accepted scientific nomenclature or that identifies a complex mixture as defined in Controlled Products Regulations 2(1).
Under the provisions of HMIRA, a supplier or employer may claim an exemption from disclosure of certain information on a label or Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) based upon confidential business information grounds. Hazard information on the material, however, cannot be claimed as confidential.
For a supplier, CBI can be:
For an employer, CBI can be:
Controlled Products Regulations
Generally, a person who employs one or more employees.
A claim for exemption that is valid or pending.
The generic chemical class or category that is no broader than necessary to protect the chemical identity which is the subject of the claim for exemption from disclosure. The objective is to mask some part or all of the chemical name which is the subject of the claim for exemption, to provide a degree of anonymity but at the same time retain the identification of the general chemical structure or radicals which may provide some link with the hazard information disclosed on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
For example:
| Chemical Identity | CAS No. | Generic Chemical Identity |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrochloric acid | 7647-01-0 | Inorganic acid |
| 1-Propanol | 71-23-8 | Alkanol |
| Chlorotriphenylmethane | 76-83-5 | Chloroarylmethane or haloarylalkane |
| Sodium dimethylbenzene sulphonate (sodium xylene sulphonate) | 1300-72-7 | Dialkylarylsulphonate (salt) or alkylarylsulphonate (salt) or arylsulphonate (salt) |
| 2-propenoic acid, 3-hydroxypropyl ester, polymer with chlorethene and ethenyl acetate | 41618-91-1 | Poly (acrylate alkyl ester/chloroalkyl/carboxylic acid ester) |
Name for a chemical class or family that may be the same as the generic chemical identity for simple compounds, or even a more general name for complex chemicals. For example, aromatic, cycloaliphatic and heterocyclic epoxies can be grouped together as epoxy resins.

Hazardous Products Act
The brand name, code name or code number specified by a supplier or the chemical name, common name, generic name or trade name that is used to identify a controlled product (Sub-section 2(1) of the Controlled Products Regulations).
A claim for exemption filed by a claimant in respect of information relating to a controlled product, but not including a 'refiled claim'.
A claim for exemption that is filed in respect of information relating to a controlled product, which is filed by the claimant who filed the original claim relating to that product, and which is solely in respect of any of the information that, under subsection 19 (2) of the Act, is or was previously exempt from disclosure in relation to that product.
A supplier is "... a person who is a manufacturer, processor or packager of a controlled product or a person who, in the course of business, imports or sells controlled products" (Section 11, Hazardous Products Act).
